The Story of Two Birds: A Reflection on Leadership and Mentorship

In the ancient Indian text, the Mundaka Upanishad , there is a profound story about two birds perched on the same tree. One bird consumes the tree’s fruits, some sweet, some bitter while the other simply observes, serene and detached. The bird that eats the fruits symbolises the part of us that is deeply engaged with life—the aspect that lives, learns, and grows through direct interaction with the world. This bird experiences both the sweet pleasures and the bitter challenges life offers, representing how we gain wisdom and knowledge through experience. The observing bird, perched quietly and detached, remains serene, watching without judgment. It embodies a state of calm awareness and wisdom, detached from the fluctuations of life.
