“It’s Not About The Work But About The Approach ”

Fifteen years ago, during my study days in Delhi, I came across a small cobbler’s shop tucked away in a busy street of Indrapuri. As I hurried past it, something unusual caught my eye a signboard. I couldn’t help but stop and smile. The shop had a unique signboard “Jakhmi Juton ka Aspatal”.At first glance, it seemed quirky, even humorous, a cobbler referring to his shop as a hospital for injured shoes and himself as Dr. Ramji Lal. What struck me was not just a creativity of the signboard but the deeper lesson it carried. This small cobbler through his presentation, elevated his work to something far beyond ordinary.

Why It Matters Today

1. Breaking Stereotypes

In a world where professions are often judged based on societal perceptions, Dr. Ramji Lal’s signboard challenges these stereotypes. Cobblers, often considered at the bottom of the professional hierarchy, are given a new identity one of respect, expertise, and purpose.

The lesson for today’s youth and professionals is clear: No work is small or insignificant. How we perceive and present our job determines its value. If you respect your profession, others will, too.

2. Innovation in Communication

In the digital age, where marketing campaigns involve millions in budgets and complex strategies, this simple signboard serves as a reminder of the power of creativity and storytelling. Dr. Ramji Lal turned something ordinary into something memorable by reimagining how his work was described.

It teaches us that innovation doesn’t always require high-end tools or expensive resources. A unique perspective and the right words can make any product or service stand out even in a competitive marketplace.

3. Self-Respect and Ownership

By calling himself a doctor and his shop a hospital, Dr. Ramji Lal didn’t just repair shoes; he healed them. His choice of words elevated his profession with pride and dignity. For today’s professionals, this serves as a lesson in ownership. Whether you are leading a team, running a small business, or working as an individual contributor, embracing your role with confidence brings purpose to your work and inspires respect from others.

4. Emotional Connection with Customers

The use of words like “अस्पताल” (hospital) and “जख्मी जूते” (injured shoes) creates an emotional connection with customers. It transforms a mundane act of shoe repair into a service of care, trust, and restoration.

In today’s business world, success hinges not just on selling products but on solving problems and telling stories that resonate. Brands that build emotional connections foster loyalty and long-term success.

5. Professionalism and Discipline

The signboard’s structure reflects operational discipline:

Clear OPD timings

Dedicated lunch hours

Defined working slots

These seemingly small details communicate professionalism and reliability qualities that form the cornerstone of any successful business or leader. In an age where hustle culture blurs boundaries, respecting structure and boundaries remains essential for sustainable success.

6. The Power of Simplicity

In a world dominated by information overload and complexity, this signboard’s brilliance lies in its simplicity. It delivers a strong message using minimal words and clear imagery.

Modern leaders and marketers can take inspiration from this: Simplicity cuts through the noise, grabs attention, and leaves a lasting impact.

A Lesson for Modern Leaders

The genius behind “जख्मी जूतों का अस्पताल” isn’t limited to its humor it’s a timeless lesson in creativity, leadership, and management. Modern leadership demands adaptability, innovation, and emotional intelligence, all of which this signboard embodies effortlessly.

It reminds us:

Perception Matters: How you present yourself and your work defines how others perceive it.

Creativity Wins: A unique perspective can turn the most ordinary tasks into something extraordinary.

Respect Your Work: Every profession holds value when approached with pride and dignity.

Build Emotional Connections: Understanding your audience and fostering trust creates long-term relationships.

Discipline Matters: Systems and processes, no matter how small, reflect reliability and professionalism.

Final Thoughts:

The signboard “जख्मी जूतों का अस्पताल” may appear light-hearted at first, but its relevance in today management world is profound. It challenges stereotypes, showcases the power of innovation, and reminds us to embrace our work with pride, creativity, and discipline.

In a world where everyone is striving for recognition and impact, this cobbler’s simple yet powerful message stands as a beacon of wisdom: It’s not about what you do, but how you do it. Approach every task, no matter how small, with dignity and purpose, and you will create extraordinary results. Even the humblest work, when done with respect and creativity, can inspire and leave a lasting impression.

Middle Management Falling in the trap of Lakshman Syndrome

What is Lakshman Syndrome? In the Ramayana, Lakshman is considered a divine figure, often associated with Shesh Nag, the cosmic serpent that bears the weight of the world. Shesh Nag is believed to support the earth and heavens, symbolizing strength and endurance. Lakshman embodies this ideal, bearing the emotional, physical, and moral weight of his responsibilities. His unwavering dedication and sacrifices mirror the cosmic duty of Shesh Nag, making him a symbol of selfless support and protection.  For 14 years, he forsook sleep, family, and comfort to serve Lord Ram and Sita. While his selflessness is commendable, it also highlights the dangers of prioritising duty over personal well-being. In the corporate world, middle managers often find themselves in a similar position, shouldering the weight of organisational expectations, decisions, and challenges. Like Lakshman, they quietly take on burdens to ensure stability, often sacrificing their own well-being in the process.  A...

Every Organization Has a Banarakas

In the fourth season of the show Panchayat, a surprising yet insightful leadership moment unfolds — Pradhan Ji, a grounded and efficient village head, loses the local election. He had everything a good leader should: integrity, dedication, and visible results. Yet he is defeated by Banarakas, a man who built his entire campaign on mockery, accusations, and theatrical disruption. The defeat wasn’t just political — it was a reflection of what happens when a leader loses focus and gets pulled into the irrelevant debate. Management Lessons From Panchayat  Banarakas was not a real competitor until he was made into one. His strength didn’t lie in strategy, governance, or public service — it lay in provocation. The moment Pradhan Ji’s team responded him and Manju Devi publicly argued with Kranti Devi — Banarakas became more than background noise. He became the narrative. Not because he earned it, but because he was handed the mic. Banrakas in every Organisation  This isn’t just the...

Have the Courage to Stand Alone- Story of Yuyutsu

In every organisation, there are moments when individuals must choose between conformity with the group and standing up for what is right. The story of Yuyutsu, the lone Kaurava who sided with the Pandavas in the Mahabharata, offers timeless lessons on courage, moral clarity, and leadership in the workplace. The Context of Courage Yuyutsu was the son of Dhitrastra and maid of Gandhari named Sugandha. He was  born into Kauravas cam, yet he chose to oppose his brother Duryodhan during the Kurukshetra war because he believed in dharma, or righteousness. His decision was neither easy nor popular it meant facing ridicule, accusations of betrayal, and alienation from his family. Yet, Yuyutsu stood firm because he understood a fundamental truth that true loyalty lies in upholding principles, not blind allegiance to Kaurava.  Duryodhan’s team had many stalwarts like Bhishma, Dronacharya, Karna, Kripacharya, and Ashwatthama, who were renowned warriors and scholars. However, none of the...
