7 Essential Virtues and 14 Failing in Leadership

When Lord Ram chose to go into exile (vanwas), his brother Bharata was devastated. Despite his heartfelt appeals, Ram stood firm on his commitment to uphold his father’s promise. Understanding his elder brother’s unwavering resolve, Bharata accepted the situation but sought Ram’s charan paduka (sandals) as a symbolic representation of Ram’s authority. Bharata vowed to rule Ayodhya as a custodian until Ram’s return, displaying profound humility and loyalty.

During this poignant exchange, Lord Ram imparted invaluable lessons to Bharata on governance and leadership. These teachings, encapsulated in the Ayodhya Kanda of the Ramayan, are not just a tale of brotherly love but a masterclass in leadership. Lord Ram demonstrated exemplary traits and shared invaluable lessons on governance, outlining essential virtues every leader must cultivate and detailing 14 failings to avoid.

Timeliness and execution are hallmarks of a successful leader. Delays in decision-making or project execution not only hinder progress but also damage a leader’s credibility.Procrastination and succumbing to desires or anger are detrimental; such individuals fail to retain or grow their governance.

Anger leads to hostility, and desires bring downfall; therefore, a leader must renounce both.Emotional regulation is essential for rational decision-making. Anger clouds judgment and can lead to impulsive actions, which a leader must avoid to maintain control and make wise choices.

9. Opening Too Many Battlefronts

A ruler who initiates conflicts with many adversaries at once and repeatedly faces broken alliances will lose their kingdom.Leaders must avoid unnecessary conflicts and focus on strengthening their kingdom. Spreading resources too thinly or engaging in too many battles can lead to the leader’s downfall.

10. Lack of Focus

рд╕рд░्рд╡ं рдиाрдзीрдд्рдп рдпो рд░ाрдЬा рдк्рд░ाрдЬ्рдЮैрд░िрд╖्рдЯं рдЪ рдпो рди рд╕ः।

Attention to detail and active involvement in governance are critical for effective leadership.A king who does not study, analyze, and implement learned strategies with the help of experts is bound to fail and face humiliation.

11. Lack of Integrity

рд╕рдд्рдпं рд╣ि рдкрд░рдоं рдзрд░्рдоं рдзрд░्рдоः рд╕рдд्рдпं рди рдЪाрди्рдпрдеा।

Redefining Success for a Balanced Life

Work 7x24, Not 24x7:  In today’s fast-paced professional world, a disturbing trend is emerging: the race for success is turning into a relentless grind. Many young professionals under 40 are succumbing to severe stress, heart ailments, and burnout. The constant demand to be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week is taking a toll on their physical and mental health. As technology blurs the boundaries between work and personal time, it’s easy to get trapped in a cycle of endless tasks, meetings, and deadlines, leaving no room for relaxation or family time.  Earlier the workday was clearly defined: reaching the office at 9 AM and leaving by 5 PM. Those were structured hours, and when the day ended, it truly ended. You went home, spent time with family, and recharged for the next day.  But as technology evolved, the concept of boundaries dissolved. Laptops meant that 5 PM became 9 PM. You would spend a few extra hours at home catching up on emails or completing unfinished ta...

Where the Heart Lies: Redefining Home in Modern India

At the age of 20, many of us feel invincible. Driven by dreams, ambition, and a desire for independence, we leave the comfort of home to carve out our place in the world. But as we approach 30, life’s realities begin to settle in, and the value of family and the warmth of home become more evident. No matter how far we go, the pull of returning home never truly fades. By the age of 40, we’re striving to build a home of our own—a space to create memories and nurture a family. At 50, that home becomes a sanctuary, each corner filled with traces of our hard work, love, and the stories we’ve built. By the age of 60, our greatest wish is to spend our remaining years in the peace and comfort of that home.  But what do we truly call “Home”? Is it our ancestral house, where our roots lie, or the new place we’ve built for ourselves in a bustling city? This question holds particular resonance for India’s migrant middle class. A Journey Between Roots and Dreams India’s middle class compri...
